The modem is implemented in software using a digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP used is the TMS320C50 from Texas Instruments. The downlink from the satellite to the ground station has a data rate of 4.800 - 21.600 bits per second (bps), selectable by command. The uplink has a fixed data rate of 2400 bps. The modulation of the data is done by a pseudo-noise scrambled frequency shift keying method. Modem performance is very close to the theoretical obtainable limit (in the 1dB range).
